All-optical signal processing typically relies on nonlinear effects in optical waveguides and devices, but a number of advanced functionalities can be performed entirely linearly by implementing advanced optical filtering functions. In particular, we have investigated how silicon micro-ring resonators (MRRs) can be used to implement a variety of signal processing functionalities, including multi-channel and ultra-high speed modulation format conversion, multi-channel demodulation of phase modulated signals, signal conditioning and waveform generation.

Polarization diversity circuit with a single micro-ring resonator and two identical polarization splitters and rotators.

We work on the following topics:

  • Ultra-high speed  non-return-to zero signal generation
  • Modulation speed enhancement of directly modulated lasers
  • Polarization-independent processing
